Understanding Statement: Many people do not realize how many sharks are native to the Delmarva area (Delaware, Maryland and Virginia). Learning about these sharks helps you to be more safe in the waters around you.
Introduction: Have you ever been to the beach? You've enjoyed playing in the sand, and jumping in the waves but did you realize there is more in the water than you and the fishes. Maryland, Delaware, and Virginia have many types of sharks that live along its coast. Complete this Treasure Hunt to learn about these types of sharks so we are safe when we visit the beach.
Questions:
1. List two ways that sharks are different from fish. Click Here!
2. Read about the body shapes of sharks. Now scroll down to shark attacks and look at the pictures of the dogfish shark and the hammerhead shark. How do you think the dogfish shark and the hammerhead shark's body shapes help them survive.

Now lets look at the sharks that live in the
Maryland/Delaware area. Find one interesting
fact about each of the six sharks
listed on this site.
4. Predict how many shark related fatalities have occurred in Maryland, Delaware and Virginia. Then go to this site to see how many really do occur. How did your predictions compare with the website.

5. Now lets look at sharks that live in the Virginia area. Which sharks that are found in Virginia are also found in Maryland/Delaware.
6. Located on this site are the depths for each shark found in Virginia. Why is it important to know the depth of the sharks if you were swimming in these waters.
