Rainforest Flower

Understanding Statement: Rainforests are warm, wet forests that many plants, animals, and people call home.

Introduction: While I was talking with my family about our upcoming vacation, someone suggested that we visit a rainforest. Do you know what a rainforest is? Do you know where any rainforests are located? Would the rainforest make a good vacation spot? My family really wants to know all about rainforests so we can plan a vacation there this summer. Complete this treasure hunt to find out as much information as possible about rainforests. When you have answered all of the questions, complete the Putting It Together activity to help me plan my vacation! Thanks!!

Questions:

Before You Begin- Take out a piece of paper and a pencil. Number your paper from 1-9.

1) Tell me what a rainforest is like, and what are a few supplies I may need to keep with me all the time?
2) Using the map, name two continents I may want to visit to see rainforests. (The dark areas are rainforest locations)
3) How will I know that I am in a rainforest and not just any other regular forest?
4) What are some supplies I will need if I want to study the canopy of the rainforest and why?
5) When walking on the forest floor, what dangers should I be looking out for?
6) I'm sure I will see many animals in the rainforest. Click through these pages and tell me one fact about an animal you would want to see.
7) I am very upset that I will not get to see any Maya people on my trip. Tell me what happened to them.
8)  I may get sick on my trip. Is there anyone I can see to get medicine?
9) While I am gone I will miss you all so much. What are some characteristics of the children in the rainforest that would remind me of you?

Are there any questions you still have about rainforests? If so, write your questions at the bottom of your answer sheet.

Putting It Together: Now that you have finished the research, it's time to share that information with me. Use the answers to the questions above to help me plan my vacation. Write a description of the rainforest for me- include where I should go, what the weather will be like, and what types of things I will see. Then, write a packing list of some necessary supplies I will need on my trip. Remember, I will be hiking through the rainforest so I will have to pack light.
