Understanding Statement: Revolutionary War!! Who Started it!!!??!
Introduction:
There are two sides to ever coin, and two tales to every story. Have you ever thought about which side is truly right? The American people felt they were being oppressed and decided to wage war against their parent colony of Great Britain. On the reverse side of the story, the British believed the Patriots were committing treason, or acts against their country. By answering the questions below, you will be able to make up your own mind as to whether the Patriots were traitors or independence fighters. You will also be able to create in your mind who began this whole thing!
Questions:
1. The Boston Massacre was as disastrous for the British as it was for the Americans. How many people were killed in the mêlée?
2. The Boston Tea Party occurred two years before the Revolutionary War. Scan the document and answer the question: What were the Coercive Acts and who did they affect?
3. Paul Revere was a very important man in his time. Watch the video clip and name 5 things that he was known for.
4. Who was the General of the Patriot forces and what did he become later in life?
5. How many casualties were there during the Battle of Bunker Hill?
6. Look at the third picture and describe what you think is happening and how you think the war is going for each side at that point in time.
7. September 11 is an important date throughout history. What happened on that date in 1776 and how did it affect the future of the war?
8. What happened to the portrait in during the Treaty of Paris and how does this create a separation between Britain and America?
9. What questions do you have about the understanding statement? Have you decided who you think is responsible? Do you have a better understanding of what happened?
Putting it all together:
Pretend you were a Soldier in one of the fighting Armies. Write four or five journal entries commenting on some of the hardships of the war. Be sure to include in one of your entries who you believe was at fault for the war. Create a cover for your journal by drawing the flag of who you thought was responsible.
